USE — Skin protectant for the prevention of allergic contact dermatitis to poison oak, ivy, and sumac

ADVERSE REACTIONS SIGNIFICANT — <1% (Limited to important or life-threatening): Erythema

CONTRAINDICATIONS — Hypersensitivity to bentoquatam or any component of the formulation

WARNINGS / PRECAUTIONS
Concerns related to adverse effects: Allergic-type responses: Use with caution in patients with history of allergic-type responses to medications (especially topical formulations).

Disease-related concerns: Cutaneous conditions: Use with caution in patients with open wounds, psoriatic lesions, or other cutaneous conditions. Poison oak/ivy/sumac: Use with caution in patients who are postexposure to poison oak, ivy, or sumac (lack of efficacy).

DRUG INTERACTIONS — There are no known significant interactions.

MONITORING PARAMETERS — Signs and symptoms of exposure to poison oak, ivy, or sumac (rash, swelling, blisters)

MECHANISM OF ACTION — An organoclay substance which is capable of absorbing or binding to urushiol, the active principle in poison oak, ivy, and sumac. Bentoquatam serves as a barrier, blocking urushiol skin contact/absorption.

PHARMACODYNAMICS / KINETICS — Absorption: Has not been studied

PATIENT INFORMATION — Do not use this medication if you have had an allergic reaction to bentoquatam. Do not use this medication on children <6 years of age, unless ordered by your child’s prescriber. Do not use this medication to treat a rash caused by poison ivy, oak, or sumac. Use this medication on your skin only. Read and follow the instructions on the medicine label. The medication must be used at least 15 minutes before you are exposed to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac. Shake the bottle well before each use. Rub a thin layer of the lotion on your skin to form a smooth wet layer. When the lotion dries, you will see a clay-like coating on the protected parts of your skin. You will need to apply more lotion on your skin at least every 4 hours or sooner if the medication rubs off. Do not use the medication in or near your eyes. If you do get the medication in your eyes, rinse them well with cool water for at least 20 minutes. Tell your prescriber if you have eye redness or eye pain that does not go away.
